Betsey Johnson Spring/Summer 2011 Collection takes fun in fashion for a full on ride!

New York, September 13, 2010

Betsey Johnson makes having fun a priority and this season she did so on a bike tour of New York City. Her show started with primary prints and solid spandex body revealing looks. Swimwear to full body suits and everything in between defined these downtown silhouettes. Nothing was left behind, including bike chains, wheels, skateboards, gloves, hats, belts, and plastic see through platform stilettos. Yes, that’s fashion according to the world's most fun having fashion designer. And no feeling of the 80’s in this show opening lineup was left behind. Hot colors on clothes and faces, stripes, leg warmers, arm warmers, geometrical sunglasses and racing bicycle hats all completed the girls. The uptown girls wore black & white knits and satins both in solids, florals, polka dots and stripes and all had bows and/or bubble silhouettes. Pastel and girlie floral patterns swept the middle of the show with doll like dresses using a crinoline effect on the last striped few and were reminiscent of tea party china. A few of these dresses were just precious. The village party goer madness continued with more pastel dresses, which were corsets and crop tops paired with skirts that could only be the offspring of a poodle skirt and a tutu. In between these jems and in a more underground or club couture than street side style, were see through black chiffon and lace dresses. There were lilac and black mermaid Barbie dresses for the Chelsea diva performers and if all of that wasn’t enough to make your head spin, the sailor girls came to the parade. Fleet week packed on 70’s hot pants and clown-like American spirit boot platforms, and flare double placket jackets and sailor hats. The show ended with jolly rancher florescent tie died pouf cake-like dresses full of ruffles and splatter paint surely for red carpet city girls. One thing is for sure, every girl wore a “Ride Me” necklace and viewers would have to be blind if they hadn’t noticed the message as it couldn’t have been louder. And then she came riding a bike with training wheels, Johnson herself, who may have very well drove off the deep end of fashion and landed right in the middle of wild-ville, right next to Betseyville. It works, but only because it’s Betsey Johnson and she is a true fun professional.
