Alexander Wang Spring/Summer 2011 still has the shock factor

New York, September 11, 2010

Leave it to Alexander Wang, King of Black, to use zero black in his Spring/Summer 2011 collection. I repeat in something of a newsflash; Alexander Wang has made a collection with no black! And it worked? Yes. Those little black dresses, skirts, and shirts from his past collections will have to suffice for next spring/summer outfits that demand a dark hue. Instead, to be ahead, fashionistas will have to say no to the dark and yes to the light. With a surplus of white, hints of teal, blues, yellow and orange beiges, and proper camel, Wang provides a look of heavenly soft fashion both in color and textiles. His deconstruction and innovative lines were still in place. Along with no black was no leg! Silhouettes reached to the knee, the shin, and floor and never above. It may be a trend so forward that fashion may not pick up on it for a few seasons, yet Wang foreshadowed the biker trend and look where that went. Sheer and soft knits, shiny and printed silk charmeuses, and metallic windbreaker chiffon like textiles were all desirable. The finale silk trench dresses and criss cross silk back suspenders that seem to “Velcro” at the shoulder are sure to be winners this season. It will be no surprise to see this collection cross over easily into editorial and wardrobes all over the planet even though it is still somewhat shocking from Wang.
