Bensoni Spring/Summer 2011 collection review
Benjamin Channing Clyburn and Sonia Yoon are taking a stride in the right direction with their Spring/Summer 2011 collection. Cohesive as always there was lightness to the fabrics and ease to their efforts. Even their show opener of a denim skirt looked like another one of their chiffon print pieces, which must have been a challenge to create. Their silhouette choices mixed 70’s and 50’s references with a bit of future inspiration using a space age backdrop and Princess Leia hairdos. The color palette played printed neutrals, peach pinks, limes, yellows, and black and whites. The best piece from the entire collection was a palm tree collar tuxedo jacket which stylists are already scrambling to get their hands on. Other signature trends were full-length chiffon striped skirts and pleated Grecian dresses most impressive being a three tier bright mustard yellow dress with a true waist skinny belt. The finale yellow chiffon shirt is a must have of this season. Overall, this collection had an air around it that felt right. These designers are doing a lot of things right actually. They are appealing to the women who buy the clothes, the women who promote them, and to the girls who model them. They have beautiful prints with a soft hand. If they push their direction a bit heavier towards where their innovation lives and maintain their ironic sophisticated youthfulness, their aim may actually hit them right on a bulls eye next season. It would be nice to see what they can do if they tried not necessarily to ‘sell clothes’ but to ‘make their mark’ on the industry; and it could possibly push them right out into the open where they are solidly earning the right to be.
